Index

In the digital and search marketing context, index is a database in which various search engines store and retrieve information about the web pages they have explored and analyzed, using special software called crawlers or spiders.

Specifically, the Google index is defined as a list of all web pages known to Google, consisting of hundreds of billions of web pages, and its size exceeds 100,000,000 gigabytes.

When a user performs a search, the search engine consults its index to find the most relevant web pages, which it then ranks using its specific ranking factors.

Indexing is a key step in the SEO process, since a web page must be in a search engine’s index in order to then actually appear in its search results.
