A backlink is a link from an external website that points to a page on another site.
Backlinks are critical for SEO because search engines view them as a sign of trust and authority. In other words, if many high-quality sites link to a site, search engines interpret this as an indicator that that site is of high quality and relevant, and thus are more likely to rank it high in search results.
