404 (error)

The 404 error code is a standard HTTP server response that indicates a “Not Found” status, meaning that the browser was able to communicate with the server, but the server did not find what was requested.

In other words, a 404 error occurs when a web page is not found: this can happen if the page was removed or moved and the URL was not redirected accordingly, or if the URL was typed incorrectly.

A 404 error is not necessarily a sign of a problem with the website; however, a high number of 404 errors can negatively affect the user experience and search engine perception of the site.

For this reason, website owners should regularly monitor their sites for status codes and in particular the presence of 404 errors and consider creating custom 404 error pages that can guide lost users to other parts of their website.
